The Chitkara University School of Maritime Studies (CUSMS) is a premier institution dedicated to shaping competent, ethical, and industry-ready maritime professionals. As an associate institution of Chitkara University, CUSMS proudly holds the distinction of being one of the first institutions across the Northern States—Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu & Kashmir—to receive approval from the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), Ministry of Shipping, Government of India (MTI No. 106025) for the B.Sc. (Nautical Science) program.
Built on the pillars of sustainability, academic excellence, and professional integrity, CUSMS blends global maritime standards with a holistic learning environment. The School continues to expand its academic footprint by introducing specialised programs tailored to meet the evolving demands of the global maritime industry, ensuring that students become future-ready leaders in international shipping.
Our flagship B.Sc. Nautical Science program is designed to transform students into skilled shipboard officers through a well-balanced combination of theoretical knowledge, hands-on training, and disciplined maritime grooming. Cadets undergo extensive academic instruction, simulate real-world scenarios, and develop strong operational skills in navigation, safety management, emergency response, maritime laws, environmental regulations, and sustainability practices. The curriculum emphasises building competencies required for a successful maritime career in the Merchant Navy, along with leadership, teamwork, communication, and decision-making.
Aligned with our commitment to responsible maritime education, CUSMS integrates several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into its operations, training modules, and institutional ethos—strengthening our contribution to a sustainable maritime future.
Sustainability Initiatives Aligned with UN SDGs
SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being +
CUSMS ensures holistic wellness for cadets through physical training (PT), parade drills, yoga sessions, band practice, medical check-ups, stress-management workshops, and regular safety and first-aid training. These initiatives promote discipline, mental resilience, and readiness for demanding shipboard life.
SDG 4: Quality Education +
Delivering outcome-based, industry-aligned maritime education, CUSMS leverages modern simulators, expert faculty, digital tools, and global-standard curriculum frameworks. Our teaching–learning ecosystem ensures high educational quality, practical competence, and international benchmarking.
SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth +
CUSMS contributes to sustainable employment and economic growth by preparing cadets for rewarding careers in the Merchant Navy. The School promotes responsible and safe work practices, ethical decision-making, and leadership skills. Cadets learn to manage shipboard operations efficiently, fostering both individual professional development and contributions to the maritime economy. Internship programs and industry collaborations further enhance employment readiness and economic engagement.
SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure+
Our advanced training infrastructure—including navigation simulators, engine-room simulators, smart classrooms, and digital learning platforms—equips cadets with the latest industry technologies, fostering innovation and operational proficiency.
SDG 13: Climate Action +
Cadets receive extensive training in sustainable navigation, pollution-prevention methods, MARPOL compliance, and environmentally responsible ship operations. These practices build a deep sense of environmental stewardship and climate responsibility.
SDG 14: Life Below Water +
CUSMS emphasizes marine ecosystem protection through practical training in ballast water management, waste disposal protocols, oil-spill prevention, and sustainable fisheries awareness. Cadets actively participate in water-body clean-up drives, awareness campaigns, and conservation initiatives to maintain biodiversity and promote healthy oceans.
SDG 15: Life on Land +
CUSMS engages cadets in land-based environmental initiatives such as tree plantation drives, sustainable waste management programs, and campus biodiversity projects. These activities instil responsibility toward terrestrial ecosystems and encourage community participation in preserving natural habitats.
SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals +
CUSMS collaborates closely with national and global maritime bodies, including the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), International Maritime Organization (IMO), shipping companies, and other maritime training organizations. These partnerships enhance academic excellence, global exposure, and collective action toward sustainable maritime development.
